SMITTY'S GROCERY STORE
SMITTY'S GROCERY STORE
Smitty's was a chain of supermarkets headquartered in Springfield, Missouri, founded by Clyde Smith in 1961. Smitty's was a fixture in Arizona for 35 years. At the time, Smitty's was considered unique because it included grocery and non-grocery items of various types under the same roof. Smitty's sparked controversy in the mid-1990s by becoming the first Arizona retailer to remain open on Christmas Day. Smitty's was purchased by Smith's Food and Drug in 1996 and rebranded as Fred Meyer Marketplace, which eventually became Fry's Marketplace after being purchased by Kroger.
