Started in 1948, Doggie Diner was a small fast food chain that served hot dogs and hamburgers. The first location opened in Oakland, California and quickly grew in popularity. At one time there were 30 Doggie Diner locations around the San Francisco Bay Area. The chains most notable feature was the sign: a 7-foot-tall rotating head of a grinning dachshund, wearing a bow tie and a chef's hat. In 2006, the Doggie Diner dog head became a San Francisco landmark. Doggie Diner went out of business in 1986 after it couldn't compete with the bigger chain restaurants.
