The Story

Greasy Tony's, another University of Arizona-area staple, served cheesesteaks, pizza, hoagies, meatball sandwiches and calzones for 30 years. There were 4 locations in New Jersey, and three in Arizona. Greasy Tony's signature sandwich, the "Trash Can," had everything thrown on it — steak, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, peppers and mushrooms. Greasy Tony's was immortalized in the 1984 movie "Revenge of the Nerds," filmed in Tucson, when a crude character nicknamed Booger wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the restaurant's logo. The only remaining location in Tucson, on Speedway, was closed in 2008, after owner Tony Giorgianni passed away from a heart attack. The space has since been torn down for student housing.
