Night Hawk Shaker Pint Glass

The Night Hawk opened in 1932 and was originally a burger joint at the corner of Congress Avenue and Riverside Drive that became an instant hit with the UT crowd. The original Night Hawk had two booths and a counter with eight stools. The number of Night Hawks operating in Texas grew to seven, and some became full steakhouses, with four in Austin, two in San Antonio, and one in Houston. The Night Hawk holds a unique place in Austin history. They were among the first restaurants to hire minorities and women, as far back as 1935. They desegregated in 1959, serving black customers years before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made it mandatory across the country.
