Founded by Clyde Smith in 1961, Smitty's was a chain of supermarkets headquartered in Springfield, Missouri. Smitty's had been a fixture in Arizona for 35 years. At the time, Smitty's was considered unique because they included grocery and non-grocery items of various types under the same roof. Smitty's sparked controversy in the mid 1990s, becoming the first Arizona retailer to remain open on Christmas Day. Smitty's was purchased by Smith's Food and Drug in 1996 and rebranded Fred Meyer Marketplace, which eventually became Fry's Marketplace after being purchased by Kroger.
