Woodsy Owl was created in 1970 and first appeared in 1971 as part of an educational program for the US Forest Service with the aim of motivating children to form healthy, lasting relationships with nature. The original Woodsy motto was "Give a hoot! Don't pollute" and has since been updated to "Lend a hand—care for the land!" Woodsy Owl has become an American icon who has found his way into pop culture through numerous songs, comics, and television appearances.
